Mr. Major George was born on March 1, 1927. He spent his childhood in Arredondo, Florida—a small community nestled just outside Gainesville—where he lived on a farm surrounded by horses, cows, and pigs, lovingly raised by his parents Amos George, Sr. and Millie Batie George. Major also lived in Goulds, Florida for many years, with other family members.
Major George attended schools within the Alachua County School System and studied at Lincoln School until the ninth grade. In 1945, he was drafted into the military at Fort Benning, Georgia, during World War II. He served in various roles, acting as a trainer at Camp Harahan (Camp Plauche) in Louisiana and working as a cook that same year. Major only stayed in a state for a short period of time; he was transferred to wherever his services was needed, including locations such as Washington, Louisiana, California, Korea, and several others. He received an honorable discharge in 1947. He also managed a baseball team in the community in his early days.
After dedicating over thirty years to his work as a Longshoreman at the Fort Lauderdale Port, Major retired. He found joy in fishing, tending to his garden, and enthusiastically cheering for the Florida Gators.
After many years of serving and fishing on Sunday, March 29, 2026, Major found rest in the arms of the Lord.
